Operation Cobra was launched by the Americans on July 25, 1944, and was a pivotal moment in the Normandy campaign, breaking through German defenses and making their further resistance in France futile. Hitler began resorting to desperate measures and erratic strategies, angered by the assassination attempt levelled against him and the failures on the front, but by August 1944, the Allies, bolstered by overwhelming numbers and resources, launched a successful offensive that threatened to encircle and eliminate the German forces in France, through the Falaise Gap.
