Air Combat – 1989 Gulf of Sidra Incident June 1, 2019 Unipro2013main Military History, US Air Force, US Navy </p> <h2>Gulf of Sidra Incident</h2> <p> On 4 January 1989, two United States Navy F-14 Tomcats shot down two Soviet manufactured Libyan MiG-23 Floggers which the Americans believed were attempting to engage them, as had happened eight years prior during the Gulf of Sidra incident, in 1981.
