In 1987, the Strait of Hormuz was on the brink of collapse. As the Iran-Iraq War spilled into the Persian Gulf, Iranian gunboats, mines, missiles, and fast-attack craft threatened one of the world’s most important oil routes. To keep tankers moving, the U.S. launched Operation Earnest Will, reflagging Kuwaiti tankers and escorting them with American warships.
