STORYLINE:
Bucharest’s Baneasa Airport hosted the opening of the BIAS International Air Show on Friday, featuring emergency drills by firefighters and special police forces alongside aerobatic displays by teams from Turkey and Italy.
The show kicked off with a dramatic fire drill in which a Spartan transport plane, simulated an emergency landing due to engine failure.
Fire trucks raced across the tarmac as coloured smoke drifted across the aircraft, with firefighters spraying water and carrying evacuated passengers on stretchers.
“We simulate an intervention to extinguish a fire and grant medical assistance to the passengers of a Spartan-type plane that was forced to land due to an engine failure,” said Eduard Stefan, spokesperson for the Bucharest Emergency Situations Inspectorate.
He said such exercises are held every year at both Baneasa and Otopeni airports “in order to verify our own capacity for intervention and our own intervention plans.”
Romanian police staged their own display, with special forces descending from a Black Hawk helicopter by rope, performing a staged gun fight and deploying a police dog in a chase sequence before climbing back aboard the helicopter as it hovered overhead.
In the skies, the Turkish Stars returned to BIAS after eight years, performing high-speed maneuvers in their Northrop NF-5 Freedom Fighter jets.
The Frecce Tricolori, the official aerobatic team of the Italian Air Force, also made their return to Bucharest after 14 years, bringing their MB-339 aircraft and a program built around synchronized flying.
