Did Charles I’s Incompetence Cause The English Civil War?

The English Civil War, a period of intense religious and political upheaval, was significantly driven by the perceived incompetence and stubbornness of King Charles I. His autocratic belief in the divine right of kings, coupled with his naive and arrogant decision-making, alienated both his Parliament and the various religious factions across England, Scotland, and Ireland. Controversial religious reforms were tremendously unpopular, culminating in the king’s disastrous attempt to arrest MPs and the eventual declaration of war.
