Hitler’s invasion of Poland was originally supposed to begin on August 26, 1939, six days before World War II actually began in Europe. German forces had their orders when Hitler suddenly postponed the attack. Britain had just formalized its commitment to Poland, while Mussolini warned that Italy wasn’t ready for a wider European war. Hitler still hoped Poland could be destroyed without Britain and France intervening. When his diplomatic efforts failed, he gambled that they would back down anyway.
On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Two days later, Britain and France declared war.
