The Third Reich was much more than Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. Between 1933 and 1945, Germany was progressively transformed into a dictatorship in which state institutions, party organizations, security forces, and different sectors of society were subjected to a deeply complex authoritarian system. Although Hitler concentrated ultimate authority, beneath him lay a massive structure made up of ministers, regional leaders, bureaucrats, military officials, and organizations that constantly competed for power and influence.
Inside the regime, traditional institutions coexisted with new organizations created or controlled by the Nazis. The Nazi Party, the SS, the Gestapo, the SD, and numerous administrative bodies carried out different and sometimes overlapping functions. At the same time, figures such as Heinrich Himmler, Hermann Göring, Joseph Goebbels, and Martin Bormann built their own spheres of influence around Hitler. This internal competition produced a system that might have seemed extremely organized from the outside, but was in reality marked by rivalries, duplication of roles, and constant struggles to interpret and execute the Führer’s decisions.
Control of the population was another fundamental element. Propaganda, censorship, education, and youth organizations were utilized to spread Nazi ideology, while political and racial persecution intensified through discriminatory laws, surveillance, arrests, and deportations. Jews, political opponents, and numerous persecuted groups were progressively excluded from society and subjected to escalating violence, which during World War II culminated in mass deportations and the Holocaust. The economy was likewise directed toward rearmament and, later, the demands of total war.
But how did Nazi Germany REALLY work from within? This documentary reconstructs the structure of the Third Reich from Hitler’s rise to power in 1933 to the ultimate collapse of the regime in 1945. From the Reich Chancellery and the ministries to the SS, the Gestapo, the Wehrmacht, the propaganda apparatus, and the administration of occupied territories, we will discover how power was distributed, who made the decisions, and how a system characterized by centralized authority, internal rivalry, and brutal repression managed to control Germany for twelve years before ultimately being destroyed by the very war it unleashed.
