Known by few, a small group of Westerners grew up and lived inside Mao’s China. Starting in 1966, they witnessed first hand the upheaval of the Cultural Revolution. At the same time young leftist activists In Western Europe idolized Mao as a harbinger of a utopian society. As China eased its isolation in the early 1970’s, both groups were in for a harsh reality check.
