The massacre occurred during the initial thrust of the Battle of the Bulge on December 17, 1944, when the lightly armed American convoy of the 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion and medics was ambushed by SS-led Panzer Division commanded by Joachim Peiper near the Baugnez Crossroads outside Malmedy, Belgium.
