Unlike the Russian army in 1917, French mutineers did not seek to overthrow the government or make peace with Germany. Their demands were practical: stop senseless attacks, improve conditions, and grant fair leave. Leaders such as Louis Barthas rejected revolutionary excess. This restraint, combined with Pétain’s response, prevented collapse and kept the front intact.
