The prolonged fighting prevented a breakthrough, establishing the static trench warfare that defined much of the Western Front during the war.</p> <p>The Second Battle of Ypres occurred in 1915, and marked the first large-scale use of poison gas in warfare. German forces released chlorine gas, causing significant Allied losses.</p> <p>The Third Battle of Ypres, also known as Passchendaele, occurred in 1917 and aimed to break through German lines. It was fought on a low-lying area prone to heavy rain and the battle is remembered for the harsh muddy conditions.</p> <p>This is part three of a series exploring the WW1 sites on the Western Front and I start my visit in Belgium at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in the world.
