Royal Marines Retake 3 Hijacked Vessels | October 2011

Italian-flagged Bulk Carrier, the MV Montecristo.

In October 2011, Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel, R.F.A. Fort Victoria, and the Royal Navy’s Type 23 Frigate, HMS Somerset, were on patrol in the Indian Ocean. Both had a detachment of Royal Marines onboard which, over the course of four days, would be employed to retake three hijacked vessels, among them Italian-flagged bulk carrier, the MV Montecristo.
By the end of the operations, the Marines would have captured just over twenty pirates and freed upto fifty hostages; all without firing a single round in action.
