The Battle of Rathmines, 1649: a Royalist fiasco in Dublin

The Battle of Rathmines is one of the most important battles of the wars that raged in Ireland in the 1640s and early 1650s. Ormond’s failure to retake Dublin with his royalist army in August 1649 gave Cromwell a port to land his large army in. Moreover, the scale of the defeat meant that royalist forces scattered, making Cromwell’s task easier. It is an interesting lesson in the importance of leadership in battle.
