Turkey has been a great power of the Western sphere ever since the Anatolian peninsula was invaded and conquered from the Greeks by the nomadic Turkic tribes. The rise of the Ottoman Empire, and its protrusion into Europe gave the Turks a prominent role in European history that continues even into the modern day, however, there was a time when the European powers had a opportunity to partition Turkey, and relegate the Turks to a small province within Northern Anatolia.
