Robert Shipe was drafted into the U.S. Army in March of 1944, immediately after completing High School. After basic training he was assigned to the 97th infantry Division where he trained as a BAR man. In basic his unit had been training for Pacific combat, but after the Battle of the Bulge broke out, Shipe found himself on a troop transport bound for Europe.
